Woodpen’s Club Calendar of Events for 2014

Giants game Tuesday February 4th, 2014 featuring Woodwards’ 1.49 day.

Fans get value for their $1.49!

The $1.49 Day theme was resurrected by the Vancouver Giants on Tuesday evening, February 4th, in the old Pacific Coliseum. The Vancouver Giants played the Red Deer Rebels. Members of the Woodpens’ Club, former Woodward’s employees and former Woodward’s customers alike, enjoyed a wonderful tribute to Woodward’s Stores Limited....the largest and best full-line department store in Western Canada. In fact, BC and Alberta grew up together for one hundred years, 1892—1992.

Before Christmas, Kip Woodward was contacted by Dale Saip, VP of Business Development for the Vancouver Giants Hockey team, with an exciting proposal of resurrecting $1.49 Day for the first Tuesday in February. (As Tuesday was usually a slow day for retail, Woodward’s was known for having $1.49 Day on the first Tuesday of every month.) Dale’s proposal was centered around the $1.49 theme. Buy one ticket at regular price and a second for $1.49. In addition there were items from the concession stands on sale for $1.49: hotdogs, popcorn, soft drinks, and ice cream. The Woodpen’s Club Board of Directors thought it was a great idea and now the rest is history.

In the weeks and days leading up to the Game, there was newspaper advertising and the $1.49 Day jingle was played on the radio. The Vancouver Province newspaper ran copies of an original 1950’s full page Woodward’s $1.49 Day ad with details of the Tribute to Woodward’s promotion in the centre.  Greg Douglas mentioned the promotion in his weeknd newspaper column on January 18th/19th.  On Monday, February 4th, Kip Woodward and John Bishop appeared on the Bill Good show on CKNW to talk about the upcoming Giants game and to reminisce about Woodward’s. Many former Woodward’s customers and employees phoned in to say how much they enjoyed Woodward’s and how much they miss the Store.

On the evening of the Game, the doors were opened earlier than usual at 5:00 P.M. when Woodwardites could meet for a pre-game reception. The Overwaitea Food Group, one of the major sponsors of the Vancouver Giants, had supplied “Woodward’s Banners” to hang around the Coliseum. The Giants players’ hockey helmets had the Woodward’s logo on them for this game only.  The Beatles Tribute Band performed sets in the beer garden not far from the Woodpens’ Club table to add to the feeling of nostalgia. We were happy that we were able to sign up several new Woodpens’ Club members and sell a few more “Cruise for two” raffle tickets before the game and between periods. A big thank you to the Woodpens’ Club members who volunteered to help at our table at the game and thank you to Bill Lawrie for his help in organizing the event!

It was a big thrill for Kip Woodward, Pidge McBride (former VP Woodward’s Foods) and John Bishop to be asked to drop the puck at centre ice prior to the official start of the game! Another highlight was the whistling contest between the second and third period. It was great that the Giants were able to find and invite the fellow who wrote/composed the original $1.49 Day jingle.

Peter Wall received an award! During a break in the second period, our Woodpens’ Club Treasurer, Peter Wall, was interviewed and shown on the big screen above centre ice. Peter was presented with the Vancouver Giants Valor Award in recognition of his leadership and excellence within the Woodward’s Community.....for being Treasurer of the Woodpens’ Club for over 17 years.

We are sure that all Woodwardites who were at the game enjoyed themselves very much! It was a good game and it was great that the Giants won the game in the sudden death overtime period!

We hope that the Giants management team were happy with this special promotion and the attendance at the “Tribute to Woodward’s” game. We would like to do it again next year if possible. With more lead time, we could perhaps tie it onto a special Woodward’s reunion and extend an invitation to all Woodwardites, BC and Alberta. Now that it has been done once, more Woodwardites might want to share the experience of watching the Giants play good hockey, paying the regular price for the first ticket and $1.49 for a second ticket, and also enjoy hot dogs, popcorn, soft drinks and ice cream for just $1.49.
