Woodpens’ Club Calendar of Events for 2012
1) Woodpens’
Club Day at the Races
Another fun Woodpens’
Club Day at the Races....
No big winners...no big losers...all enjoyed
the ever-popular Fraser Downs delux buffet lunch!
On Sunday, March 25th,
fifty-three Woodpens’ Club Members, friends and
family, enjoyed a wonderful sunny day at the Cloverdale Fraser Downs Racetrack
& Casino! The Woodpens’ Club group enjoyed
the fun and excitement, seated in their own special area of the clubhouse, with
every table having a wonderful view of the track and the graceful, fast pacing,
trotting horses. For most of the group, the horses were not fast enough!
We thank Ian Murdoch again
for making the arrangements for this most enjoyable Woodpens’
Club Day at the Races!
2) Woodward’s Classic Golf
Tournament 2012
Friday, May 3rd, turned out to
be another day that proved that
“ it never rains on the golf course”! This year marked the 31st year of this
classic tournament. The number of golfers was about the same as last year....
68 golfers participated in this year’s tournament. While it was pouring rain in
Vancouver in the early hours of the day, there was no rain at the Grandview
Golf Course, just south of Blaine, Washington. Again, the border crossing was
not a problem for anyone.
It did not matter that some
golfers were more experienced than others.... there were some magnificent shots
made by everyone at some point in the game, the kind of shots that make you
want to keep playing the game. It was rumoured that a little money might have
changed hands! Before, during and
after the game, there was the usual camaraderie and catching up on old
friendships and the making of new ones. After all the golfers were finished
their rounds, the traditional cold beer, gourmet chicken and salad were
appreciated by all!
Prior to the prize
presentations, Ian Murdoch thanked the golfers for coming to the
Tournament. It was great to see
that several Woodwardites had travelled a distance to
participate in the tournament, Dave Kerr coming from Edmonton and Ian McDonald
(Hardware Division) coming the furthest distance from Australia. It was great
to have Kip Woodward with us this year!
Ian gave a special thank you
to those people who made donations toward the hole
prizes. The list of donors included John and Kip Woodward, Frank Robertson, and
John Bishop. He also thanked all those who brought prizes with them. The prizes
were wonderful again this year! The winners were picked at random and the golf
scores didn’t count. However cash prizes were awarded to the men’s
Low Gross winner Frank Rainey with a score of 82, and the Ladies Low Gross
winner, Joanne Pitcher, with a score of 85. The “Longest Drive”
winners were: Mabel Skelton and Joanne Pitcher for the ladies and for the men,
it was Mike Valois and Steve Murdoch. The “Closest to the Hole”
winners were Bob Grant for the men, and Betty Peters for the women. As happens each year, everyone who
participated in this year’s tournament was a winner, as a bag of keepsake
items was given to each player.
Again the tournament
would not be possible without the usual 50/50 draw—this year’s
winner was John Hopkins, winning $400. A good portion of the draw money will be
donated to the Union Gospel Mission. The Tournament would also not be possible
without the hard work and dedication of the Woodward’s Golf Committee
made up of Ian Murdoch, Peter Koel, Barrie Alexander,
Ray Glover, Bill Lawrie, and Bob Beach who have
organized the Woodward’s Annual Classic Golf Tournament for over 31 years
now. Marv Anhorn, a long-time member of this
committee, passed away in April of this year his presence was greatly missed.
Marv was responsible for finding the special keepsake prizes each year and he
did a great job in this regard!
Thanks to the Golf Committee
and all the participants for a wonderful day of golf, fun and friendship!

The Musicman
.....Directed by Sarah Rodgers; Choreography by Dayna Tekatch; Musical
Direction by
Christopher King.
The creative team that delivered last summer’s
hit “Anything Goes” takes another beloved Broadway classic: the
story of charming con man Harold Hill, who sets out to scam the townspeople of
River City, Iowa by posing as a marching band organizerwho
will keep their kids out of trouble if they give him money for instrumentsand uniforms. Unexpectedly, Harold meets his
match in prim Marion the librarian....but the course of true love (and
deception) never did run smooth, and hilarity ensues, accompanied by a
succession of timless songs, from “Ya Got Trouble” and “Seventy-six
Trombones” to “Gary Indiiana” and
“Till There was You” (all from the pen of Meredith Wilson).
The Music Man is set exactly
one hundred years ago in 1912. It won five Tony Awards during its first
Broadway run (50 years ago), including Best Musical. We look forward to seeing
many Woodwardites at this delightful and memorable Woodpens’ Club Night at Theatre Under
the Stars in Stanly Park on Monday evening, July 9th!
